We understand that children learn at different speeds and hold pupil progress meetings with staff every half term in order to discuss children’s learning and identify any support that is needed.

Children often need a short burst of additional support to help them fulfil their learning potential. If we still have concerns about a child, we will arrange a meeting with you to discuss whether or not your child may have a special educational need, adding them to our register if necessary.

It is crucial that parents and children become a part of this process and we actively encourage that you do so by holding regular meetings to discuss the progress of your child. We will arrange formal meetings each term for children who are provided with an individual education plan, working collaboratively to identify targets and allocate provision to ensure that the needs of the children are being met.

Our teaching assistants are highly skilled and work within class to support children, whilst also delivering additional support through out of class interventions for skills such as reading, writing, maths and spellings. We also provide social and behavioural interventions which are designed to nurture children and help them understand the importance of the choices that they make.

Ms Foster is our appointed SENCo, who is very approachable and happy to meet with parents to discuss any concerns or questions that you may have. To speak with Ms Foster please contact the school office, details can be found on our contact page. The SENCo is also responsible for co-ordinating the support that children receive across the school, whilst working with other teaching staff and outside agencies to ensure that children’s learning needs are being met. A link to the local authority SEND offer is available here. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at school.

Thrive

Race Leys Junior School is proud to have embraced Thrive to support children’s social and
emotional wellbeing. Our intention is to develop children emotionally so they are able to recognise and manage their emotions as well to develop skills that enable them to participate fully in school and social activities. Our Thrive approach provides children with a safe and calm environment in which to regulate their emotions. Specialist therapeutic work, also allows children to take pride in their achievements and strengthen their self-esteem. Thrive is a dynamic and developmental play-based approach which supports all children across the school.

The implementation of Thrive is carried out by our trained licensed practitioner who provides small group and 1-2-1 work with children who may need additional support. However, all children across the school will have access to Thrive sessions through our creative curriculum which builds social and emotional resilience.

Through focused and creative play-based activities, the impact of Thrive can be seen through the positive feedback on children’s social and emotional wellbeing as well as their finely developed social skills which all create a happier and calmer school environment.
